Jay's earliest childhood memories are in foster care, bouncing house to house, some of the parents nice, most not caring and some straight up abusive. America's foster care system was very flawed, he learned that first hand as a child. When he was thirteen he once again went through the process of meeting a family, it was routine, they were always nice but they always decided against adopting him. It was no use to like any of these people or get attached during the visits. Except, then he was in their home, but still not trusting them. When he was fifteen, the adoption was finalized and he was a part of the Williams family. While they were sweet and kind, went to church every Sunday, Jay didn't know how to care for anyone, he never had before.
Despite his new parents trying, and really seeming to want to keep Jayson, he just couldn't be one of those kids who behaved well. He didn't mean to disappoint his new family, but he wasn't use to trying to live up to someones expectations. He had always felt uncared about, which meant he could do whatever he wished, no one punished him because they cared about his well being.
Safe to say, Jay got into a decent amount of trouble while in high school. Plenty of detentions, lots of skipping. He constantly heard people in town talking when they thought he wasn't around, saying how sorry they felt for his 'parents' and how they were such good people to deal with him. It was just more blows to his self esteem.
He had always dealt with his troubles by acting out, he wasn't sure he knew how to follow rules and behave well. Once he reached his senior year, he knew he was several credits short and chose to just drop out. Now he finds himself bartender at the only, small, bar in town.
Truthfully, Jayson has low self esteem, he has never felt wanted or cared about in his life. This means he never tries to care about anyone else. His personality comes off as rude at times, although mostly he can be a fun guy. He tends to be flirtatious, prefers one night stands because he knows no one could ever actually care for him. The attention he gets from women when he flirts makes him feel good.
Although he has low self esteem, he acts as though he is cocky, which is why many people don't like him. That and the fact that he has a bad reputation, so a lot of people stay clear of him.
